Astrology fundamentally concerns itself with the material effects of planetary and stellar energies on our physical bodies and mental states. It operates through a principle of synchronicity—a meaningful connection between our lives and cosmic movements, carefully documented throughout history since ancient sages first recorded their observations. This vast body of knowledge provides sufficient basis for acceptance without requiring personal rediscovery. While traditional wisdom attributes these correlations to past karma (a topic beyond our current scope), the foundation of astrological practice remains this documented synchronicity between human experience and celestial patterns.
To properly understand why astrological predictions and lived reality sometimes diverge, we must first examine the nature of material existence. All physical manifestations—both living and non-living—exist as material phenomena with inherently limited lifespans, undergoing constant change (even if only subtle vibrations). Interestingly, our mental experiences (known as Vrittis in yogic philosophy) must also be categorized as material, as they too are temporary and continuously transforming through our perceptions, emotions, and cognitive processes.
Given this dynamic nature of both material existence and astrological influences, we encounter the first fundamental reason why astrological readings may not perfectly reflect experienced reality: both the subject (person) and the measurement system (astrological interpretation) represent “snapshots in time” of continuously changing systems. The celebrated Indian astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar once published research explaining why astrology cannot be classified as science—this perspective helps clarify why astrology and reality exist as distinct domains, even when astrological observations themselves are technically accurate.
Beyond this temporal dimension lies another question: how “real” is our perceived reality? Material manifestations appear differently depending on observational position (confirmed by physics) and observer characteristics (varying by age, experience, and demographic factors). This creates multiple potential meanings for the same phenomenon—causing confusion for some while enriching life’s diversity for others.
The final, most profound reason questioning reality’s basis (entering the spiritual domain of “Maya”) is the delusion created by self-identification with material things and effects. The experiential gap between ego-driven and egoless states of mind creates vastly different perceptions (comparable to fixed versus growth mindsets).
In summary, understanding astrology’s relationship to reality requires appreciating:
- The dynamic nature of material existence
- The ever-changing nature of astrological findings
- The multiplicity of meanings in material phenomena
- The dual/nondual interpretations based on self-identification
This perspective intentionally excludes karma theory and free will considerations, which would introduce additional factors separating astrological observations from lived reality.
