TYPES OF MANTRAS: BY ORIGIN

The Science of Subtle Energies

Mantras, the secrets of subtle energies, are a powerful science manifesting extraordinary abilities. Through specific processes, mantras invoke divine powers and awaken one’s yogic energy, potentially influencing the world around the practitioner. Regular, focused practice can yield material and spiritual benefits.

Mantras: The Three Sacred Paths

Mantras flow from three sacred wellsprings: the ancient Vedas containing divine knowledge through precise sound vibrations, esoteric Tantras unlocking higher consciousness through sacred rituals, and storytelling Puranas making spiritual wisdom accessible through mythology and symbolism. Each path serves unique seekers.

Vedic Mantras

The Vedas, divided into four parts by Rishi Veda Vyasa, contain sacred verses requiring precise intonation and pronunciation. Notable examples include the Gayatri mantra and Maha Mrutyunjaya mantra, primarily used in fire rituals for universal peace.

These mantras address three types of afflictions: âdhi davika tâpa (natural calamities), âdhi bhautica tâpa (external conflicts), and dâhyatmika tâpa (internal struggles), connecting practitioners to Universal Intelligence.

TANTRic Mantras

Tantric mantras emerged as a rebellion against rigid interpretations of Vedic traditions (in reality they are open and liberal), embracing inclusivity through tantra (ritual), mantra (sound), and yantra (sacred geometry). Examples include “Om Im Hrim Shrim” and the Shodashakshari Mantra.

These mantras require transmission through living teachers and follow either vama marga (left-hand path) or dakshina marga (right-hand path), focusing on expanding individual consciousness to achieve Unity consciousness.

PURANic Mantras

Puranas, comprising 18 sacred texts, present spiritual wisdom through accessible stories and poetry. The Vishnu Purana, Padma Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Shiva Purana and the others contain numerous deity-specific mantras.

Though sometimes appearing contradictory, these mantras ultimately align with advaita (non-dualism) philosophy, making complex metaphysical truths accessible through simple, narrative-driven practices.
